Eisenia Foetida and Andrei earthworms, commonly called Californian Reds, suitable for home and corporate composting. They are also used as protein feed for birds and reptiles.

There are various types of earthworms that can be bred, but the most suitable is the Californian red earthworm or Californian (Eisenia Fetida and Andrei) which is actually just one of the thousands of species of earthworms present on Earth.

It weighs about one gram, is 6-8 cm long and a few millimeters thick; it is able to produce one gram of compost per day. The worm’s body contains about 70% protein and a low fat content of less than 10%.

It avoids intense sunlight, and reproduces rapidly: in three months in optimal conditions the earthworm population can double!

The Californian red earthworm needs an optimal temperature of 20 degrees centigrade, but can withstand a temperature range between zero and 38 degrees centigrade. In ideal conditions, it can live between 1 and 3 years.

To reproduce, the temperature must be between 14 and 27 degrees. The earthworm is an imperfect hermaphrodite, so both specimens that mate will release eggs that can contain from one to five earthworms.

Mating occurs in the spring and autumn phases, that is, when the average temperatures are between 20 and 25 degrees. The eggs will hatch in about 15 days and the small earthworms will be adults in about 30 days.
